Album review
Rather Sound than Safe
Rebirth (Ztudio)
Sif and Rasmus Neo, the Danish couple who produce under the Rather Sound than Safe sobriquet, have pulled off a rare feat with their debut full-length release. They’ve taken progressive house, a sound not often associated with personality, and infused it with humanity and feeling, largely through an elegant sort of minor-key musicianship and a liberal dose of Sif’s sultry, subdued vocals. It’s those qualities that almost lift the album out of the house realm entirely; this material is closer to the gothic refinement of classic 4AD acts like Dead Can Dance or Cocteau Twins—albeit an electronic. bleepier version of those two bands—than what you’ll hear at Pacha on a Saturday night, and it’s all the better for it. This is emotive, gorgeous music from a team that will likely be around for a while.
